Julian Dawson

London-born singer and songwriter Julian Dawson has been making music for 50  years, has recorded no less than twenty-six highly regarded albums under his own name in Nashville, Woodstock, Austin TX. and New York, as well as five with his colleague Ian Matthews in the group ‘Plainsong’.

A glance through his album credits reveals collaborations with an incredible range of artists: German avant-garde group Can, guitar heroes Richard Thompson & Duane Eddy, Little Feat, soul legend Dan Penn, jazz harmonica wizard Toots Thielemans, Rolling Stones pianist Nicky Hopkins, Vince Gill, Lucinda Williams & the Roches, to name a few.

Though born in England he has had most success in other countries and tours regularly all over Europe and North America. Eagle-eyed fans may have seen him with Richard Thompson on ‘Later with Jools Holland’ (now on YouTube) or at festivals in Winnipeg (CAN), Newport and Kerrville (USA), or Cambridge, Cropredy, Shrewsbury and Glastonbury (UK).

Shows feature his trademark haunting vocals, eloquent guitar accompaniment, virtuoso harmonica, world-beating songs and charismatic connection to his audience.

He remains as busy as ever. His finest work has been collected on two 3xCD ‘Best Of’ compilations, Life & Soul, Vols. I & II, and, after the publication of his acclaimed biography of Nicky Hopkins, he is soon to publish a life of ‘60s pop star Spencer Davis.

Since Brexit he has been based in the south of France.

‘What makes him so special? Julian Dawson has the ineffable quality of inspiring and moving the listener to a better place. His songs perfectly illustrate the point that Dawson is currently hanging out the competition to dry.’

Folk On Tap, U.K.

‘One of the most startling, marvellous performances I’ve witnessed. A must-see act.’
